Full leather, red leather block on spine with gold lettering and border, 12mo (17 cm). frontispiece portrait of White at age 21, [viii] 358 pp. Henry White was an ambitious young man of many talents. A ravenous learner, he taught himself several languages and published a book of poetry while apprenticed as a lawyer, yearning for university life. When finally sponsored for an education, he slept little and ate at his desk, memorizing and composing during his daily walks. He died at age 21. The author was entrusted with his letters, poems and works in progress, which he edited into two volumes (this is volume I, including the biography). Good: edges and corners worn, leather scraped around edges, old sticker on spine worn, chip torn from ffep and small corner torn from frontispiece with no loss, po plate and marking on front pastedown and light pencil on ffep, no internal markings, some foxing and tanning.
