About This Item
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1948. First edition other then a limited printing of 1000 copies. 8vo, publisher’s original blue cloth lettered in gilt. A fine copy. FIRST EDITION OF SANDBURG'S ONLY NOVEL. The author described it as, "an epic, weaving the mystery of the American Dream with the costly toil and bloody struggles that gone to keep alive and carry further that Dream." This poetic novel traces the history of one American family from its 17th century English origins to World War II as it develops and builds on the theme of the “American Dream”. Sandburg was a multi-Pulitzer prize winning author, poet, historian, journalist and biographer who’s understanding of the common man, his simple yet powerful utterances and view of an American way of life as being a free, untrammeled and democratic promised existence, made his poetry stand out in the 20th century as Walt Whitman’s had in the 19th.
Synopsis
A monumental novel that follows the growth of the American dream through more than three centuries. A saga, chronicle, and miscellany on folk themes, it is Sandburg's passionate testament of American life.
