Paris.. ( 1809).. Color stipple engraving, plate size approx. 8 3/4 inches by 6 inches. Faint offset, generally clean and bright. With accompanying text page in French. Beautiful stipple engraving, depicting flower and botanical details, from "Plantes de la France" by J.H. Jaume Saint-Hilaire. The French were the masters of the botanical stipple engraving, which Redoute used to great effect. The text gives such information as countries where it grows (France, Europe), months of flowering, its name in several languages, its uses and culture. Dunthorne ("Flower and Fruit Prints") describes these as "small but exquisitely delicate plates of pure colour printing". .
