Illustrated with reproductions of historical images. Folding map bound-in at rear, printed black and red. Index. Fore-edge untrimmed. Bound in dark green cloth with gilt lettering and rules stamped on spine. Brown topstain, fore-edge untrimmed. A bright, fresh copy, mostly unopened. First edition. Handsomely printed on Beckett paper. According to CLARK & BRUNET, the Hafens had done prior work with the Arthur H. Clark Company, but their relationship was "fully established with the 15-volume Far West and Rockies Series." A work of enduring quality and scholarship, this volume mined significant primary source material to thoroughly contextualize the correspondence from Thomas Wildman, Mary B. Wildman, his wife Mollie, and brother Augustus. They had come overland from Danbury, Connecticut. One of the most readable of the "Far West and the Rockies" series. Includes letters written by Wildman on the way to Denver and after arriving, telling of his attempt at mining, his employment in Denver, etc.; much on the Pike's Peak gold rush, and numerous letters giving a vivid picture of life in Denver, 1859-1865.
