The book contains multiple hand inscriptions that are only partially legible. The pencil inscription on the front flyleaf contains references to Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, as well as the years: 1911 and 1914. It is possible that the text in some way refers to the Bosnian crisis which served as a prelude to WWI. But, since we have not been able to translate the entire text, we cannot be certain of the context. Collection of 190 fine hand-coloured stipple and line-engraved fashion plates from two decades of Ackermann's influential Repository of Arts.
Plates date from January 1809 to December 1828 and include examples of outfits for all times of the day and social occasions: morning dress, walking or promenade dress, full evening dress, opera and ball gowns, carriage or travel clothes, dinner, garden, mourning and wedding dresses.
Some of the clothes and hats were designed by famous London dressmaker Miss Pierpoint of 9 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, tailor and habit-maker Mr Barry of 55 New Bond Street, milliner and dressmaker Mrs Elizabeth Gill of 1 Cork Street, Burlington Gardens, Mrs Charlotte Bean of Albemarle Street, Mrs Griffin of Rider Street, St. James, and the notorious serial bankrupt Madame Ann Margaret Lanchester.
The elegant ladies are shown dancing at balls, sitting on chaise longues, walking on beaches, reading love letters while strolling, playing the piano, looking at etchings, reading music scores, writing letters at a desk, drinking tea, flirting with fans at parties, etc.
The plates are taken from 190 issues of the magazine (one of the two fashion plates per issue). Illustrations accredited to Thomas Uwins who went by the pen-name Arbiter Elegantiarum.
Bound in half red morocco, five raised bands, gilt title Costume of the Ladies of England 1809-1828, ornate gilt floral tooling, marbled boards faded, aeg, most plates in very good condition with fine hand-colour, a few with faint spotting.

London: Richards Phillips, 1810. Beautiful and incredibly scarce collection of Regency fashion plates from subscription magazine illustrated with 185 engraved plates, 181 hand-colored and an additional hand-colored allegorical vignette on title page.Rare to find such a large grouping of plates, bound in a single volume, although bound rather haphazardly (several plates out of order, issues run from issue no. 88, May 1805 – no. 142 followed by a number of undated plates from 1810-11).Octavo, half-calf paneled binding with marbled paper inset matching marbled endpapers. Original wrappers not bound in. Also included is one issue of 'La Belle Assemblee', March 1808 with Lady in a Parade Dress in Hyde Park. Internally a little foxed, repairs in inner hinges to (unconvincingly) match the marbled endpapers. Plates in remarkably bright condition. Scarce.

All edges gilt, endpapers lined with multiple coloured snail marbled paper on combed marbled patterns. Oblong folio (455 x 335 mm). Spine-ends minimally frayed. The personal copy of Monsieur François Philippe Voisin (1821-1918) (= Voisin Bey), his name stamped in gilt on front cover, a French engineer and from 1861 to 1870, the chief engineer of the Suez Canal Company during the construction of the Suez Canal, together with its director Ferdinand de Lesseps.
