Description:
These books have a wealth of information bearing on genealogy and family, economic and social history, Jewish Law and the status of women. Jewish marriage contracts (Ketuba or Ketubbah) show the artistic taste of the lands in which Jews have resided. The Ketuba expresses the joy and jubilation of the marriage. The Ketubbah is a document recording the financial obligations which the husband undertakes toward his wife in respect of, and consequent to, their marriage, obligations which in principle are imposed on him by law. Most Jewish communities have followed the custom of decorating the Ketubbah. Includes marriage contracts from countries in the diaspora as disparate as India and Italy. Two books inserted into slipcase. Each book has 116 pages with 16 black and white photographic illustrations of contracts, accompanying text on the opposite page plus 18 tipped-in color plates. Decorative endpapers. Text in Hebrew and English. Clean unmarked unread hardcover with light shelf wear to the dust jacket.

The Macmillan Company, NY, 1925; First Edition, second printing (June, 1925); 8vo, 377 pages; illustrated. First book by Rabbi Lewis Browne, a revealing history of the Jews, with 50 illustrated maps by the author. Widely regarded as one of the foremost comparative religionists of his day, Browne graduated Hebrew Union College in 1920 and was ordained rabbi to Temple Beth Israel in Waterbury, Ct. by Rabbi Stephen Wise. He left the rabbinate in 1926 to devote his time more fully to writing, and was thereafter much in demand on the national lecture circuit, where he was frequently teamed with Sinclair Lewis. Browne died a mysterious death in 1949 at his home in Santa Monica, California reportedly of "suicide by poison." Fine, in illustrated red cloth boards with gilt titles. "In these days of high tension, both international and personal, the need for better understanding among people of all countries, all races, and all creeds is greater than ever before in the history of the world. An increased spirit of brotherhood, predicated on a clearer concept of the religious beliefs of others could well result in a new appreciation of their tenets, thereby creating an attitude of respect which is frequently lacking today both in business and in political contacts...." - Foreword from Days And Customs Of All Faiths
