About This Item
Philadelphia, PA David McKay, Publisher, 1895. Hardcover Very Good: shows moderate wear to the corner tips, where the leather has just started to wear through to expose the board beneath; moderate overall rubbing; faint darkening to the fore-edge and bottom edge; faintest dampstaining at the mid front hinge; coffee-like stains to the bottom edge of the text block; sun-blanching to the marbled boards of the top and outside edges of the front panel; the backstrip is very lightly sun-blanched (but the titles and gilt designs thereon remain bold and clearly legible); the lower rear corner is mildly bumped. The binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing moderate wear and a number of minor unobtrusive flaws. Bright and Clean, certainly for its age. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (7.55 x 5.35 x 1.1 inches). 289 pages. 2 Full-Page engraved Illustrations precede the text. Quarter Red Morocco with raised bands and gilt designs titles to spine and leather reinforced corners and Lovely Marbled Boards and Endpapers. Top Edge Gilt. Language: English. Weight: 1 pound, 11 ounces. Publication date is approximate (the preface is dated 1850, but this is probably a reprint, most likely from the late Nineteenth Century. Hardback: Quarter Leather with Marbled Boards. Donald Grant Mitchell (1822-1908) was an American essayist and novelist who usually wrote under the pen name Ik Marvel. He was best known as the author (under the pseudonym of "Ik Marvel") of essays contained in Reveries of a Bachelor, or a Book of the Heart (first published in book form in 1850). Reveries of a Bachelor examines the dream-like lives Americans were living at the time. It was one of the top best sellers of its time. In the text, Ik Marvel theorizes on boyhood, country life style, marriage, travel, and dreaming and the like.
