About This Item
Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company, 1892 Book. Illus. by Darley. Very Good. Hardcover. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Original fine maroon cloth wth intricate gilt decoration and colour seaside pictorial pastedown on boards. Date taken from author's facsimile signature, but no publishing date given. Internet states Preface is same as first edition of 1850. The artist, Darley, was so well-respected for his detailed drawings that he was commissioned to illlustrate banknotes, in order to discoourage counterfeiters. A very popular book in its early days. After Mitchell's copyright expired in 1893, several unauthorized versions appeared. This is probably one of them. Altemus makes beautiful books !
