About This Item

Par M. l’Abbé de Vertot, de l’Académie des Inscriptions & Belles-Lettres. NOUVELLE ÉDITION, revue & augmentée. A LA HAYE, Chez Pierre Gosse Junior, et Daniel Pinet. M.DCC. LXIX. [1769].

In 8.º de 14x11 cm.

[EN] In octavo. 14x11 cm. xii, 276 pp. Contemporary binding with leather spine and corners, with label and gilt tools. Red edges at the head.

Copy with coeval handwritten ownership title on front endpaper and oleographic ex-libris on title page.

The first two pages are blank.

Book with a detailed description of the Revolution of 1640, which restored the Portuguese Monarchy and expelled the representatives of King Philip IV of Spain, who until that date reigned in both countries, thus guaranteeing the independence of Portugal.

First published in 1989, this work proved to be a huge publishing success with over 35 editions in less than a century. According to Gastão de Melo e Matos (in the new translation and printing of 1945), it was with the Restoration that Portugal became known to the contemporary average European, since Portugal was not a political factor in Europe; and it was for the actions directed against the King of Spain that this work achieved fame. It was later translated into Portuguese, notably by Friar Mateus Brandão in 1815 and by José Ribeiro de Figueiredo in 1843.

René Aubert de Vertot (Bennetot, 1655 - Paris, 1735), French ecclesiastic and historian, member of the Academy of Inscriptions, is the author of several other historical works, namely on the Order of Malta, which had several Portuguese Grand Masters.

About Livraria Castro e SIlva

Founded in 1957, by Ezequiel Castro e Silva, LIVRARIA CASTRO E SILVA is a bibliographic commercial organization, well known in the antique book market and amongst the antiquarian booksellers, both in Portugal and abroad, for being one of the most distinguished Portuguese specialists in its area, dealing in books through several continents. We seek to maintain a family tradition that goes back to the second decade of the last century. Our main activity is the edition and periodic publication of bibliographic catalogues.

Aiming to provide faster access to our catalogues, better stock information and improving communication with our clients, in 2003 we launched our website www.castroesilva.com, allowing all interested parts an easier access to registration and order of our catalogues. This webpage has a bibliographical database which seeks to replace the old file system, in itself an historical and probably unique tool, while allowing us the means to spread information about our books and contributing to the general bibliographical research.

We are convinced that personal contact should always be privileged so all interested parts can visit us at our shop, where those seeking rare, antique books, for collecting or studying can find and examine them in the private quiet environment such activity requires.
