1974. 1st Edition. No Binding. Near Fine. Richard Nixon Signed Resignation Typescript Framed Handsomely w/ Gerald Ford Pardon. A striking matte, perfectly displaying typescripts of two of the most important documents in American history which tell the story of the resignation of President Richard Nixon. Matted in black and gold to a size of 18" x 33.25", featuring an image of Vice President Ford and President Nixon in the Oval Office. Richard Nixon pre-signed paper to which was added a mock souvenir typescript and golden Presidential seal, August 9, 1974, 5" x 8", and boldly signed by President Nixon as "Richard Nixon." Written to the Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, "I hereby resign the Office of President of the United States." Gerald Ford pre-signed paper to which was added a mock souvenir typescript "Granting Pardon to Richard Nixon", Proclamation 4311, September 8, 1974. 2 pages framed together 12" x 7.75", boldly signed by President Ford as "Gerald R. Ford". On the evening of August 8, 1974, President Nixon addressed the nation and announced his intention to resign. The next morning, White House Chief of Staff Alexander Haig presented this letter to President Nixon to sign. On September 8, 1974, in what was considered a controversial executive action, President Gerald Ford pardoned his disgraced predecessor Richard M. Nixon for any crimes he may have committed or participated in while in office. Ford later defended this action before the House Judiciary Committee, explaining that he wanted to end the national divisions created by the Watergate scandal.
