About This Item

New York: The New York Public Library. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. [book has just a touch of shelfwear to the bottom edge, but is otherwise as new; the jacket shows some handling wear, with a few scrape marks on both the front and rear panels, and a short closed tear at the bottom edge of the rear panel]. (B&W photographs, facsimiles) One of a limited edition of 250 numbered copies, this being #187, SIGNED by Dorothy Rodgers on the limitation page. (There were also 26 presentation copies, lettered A to Z.) Transcriptions of letters written by composer Richard Rodgers to his wife, covering the period 1926 to 1937, sourced from Mrs. Rodgers's personal papers on deposit at the NYPL and from her private collection. Dorothy states, in her introduction, that "most of Dick's letters to me were written between 1926 and 1937, during pre-Broadway tours -- out-of-town tryouts. The excerpts that have been chosen are concerned with his professional life, and the photographs that accompany them relate to the same period. They include informal pictures that are personal as well as professional. The letters to me are basically personal, but in these excerpts we have omitted many of the references to family problems, finances, illness, and other everyday matters. I hope the selections will create a feeling of the life and times of this golden period in the Broadway musical theatre." **** NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. **** .
