Unique copy. Course on the colonization of the Javanese people, written by Henderik Roelof Rookmaaker (Batavia 1887-1945 The Hague), 'Resident van de Lampongse Districten' from June 1933 to June 1937. It was offered to the Dutch rulers of Indonesia at his retirement. The maps show colonization regions, the Lampong region, a roadmap of the district, and a large folding map of the Lampong district with extensive statistics of ca. 74 x 55 cm. The original photographs show Javanese people at work, Javanese propagandists of the colonization, a Javanese dance, etc. Other additions are: a identity card for the colonist, a registration state to be filled in by the Dutch director of the colony, advice for the colonist printed parallel in three languages, a postcard and a postal stamp with the logo of the colonization, and leaves with statistics on the colonists, the rubber and coffee trees, the production, etc. Loosely inserted are: carbon copies of a type-written letter of 2 folio lvs. to the Dutch Governor General in Buitenzorg, dated June 18, 1937, in which Rookmaker offers two copies of his "Richtlijnen"; a type-written letter of one folio leaf to the editor of "Koloniale Studien", together with the carbon copies of the article he offers on the subject, called: "De Javanen-Kolonisatie in de Lampongsche Districten", and covering 23 folio lvs. Also added the carbon copies of 2 folio lvs. of a type-written speech which Rookmaker held on the occasion of the Queen's birthday on August 31, 1935; 2 Clippings from Indonesian newspapers on Rookmaker's farewell speech; and several folio lvs. with notes on the genealogy of the Rookmaker family. – Provenance: from the Rookmaker family. - Rare, we only found an ordinary copy of the 'Richtlijnen voor Kolonisatie met Javanen' in the Dutch National Archive.

Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates. xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Read More
