About This Item
This is the longest volume in this set and the most ambitious of Smith's work. Major articles are "Charleston and Charleston Neck--The Original Grantees and the Settlements along the Ashley and Cooper Rivers," "The Ashley River: Its Seats and Settlements," and "The Upper Ashley; and the Mutations of Families." Other articles are "The Orange Quarter and the First French Settlers in South Carolina," "Hog Island and Shute's Folly," and "Goose Creek." In these articles Smith achieves a synthesis of historical information about the growth and changes of the rivers and regional communities during a period of history when the settlers fixed the model of plantation culture on Lowcountry South Carolina. Smith died before completing his "Goose Creek" sketch and it is presented here as he left it. There is also significant genealogical material contained throughout this volume.
