With frontispiece photograph, and numerous text illus. after drawings by Töpffer. 420 pp. Large 8vo. 20th-century brown calf, spine, outer and inner edges gilt, gilt ornamental borders around sides, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, original wrappers (slightly spotted) preserved. Bookplate Paul Gavault on front pastedown. Lyon, Librairie générale, catholique et classique, 1899. First edition of Relave's second monograph about the writer and artist Rodolphe Töpffer (1799-1846), following his "Vie et Oeuvres", already published in 1886. The frontispiece shows Töpffer's bust in the Bastions quarter of Geneva, erected in 1880. - Slight browning throughout, copy in a nice binding.
