About This Item

London: Faber & Faber, 1947. First UK Edition . Cloth. Very Good/Good. 7.5" x 5. Very Good in Good jacket. London: Faber & Faber, 1947. First English Edition. 7.5"x5", 607 pp. Red cloth, silver spine imprinting, red, black & white jacket as show in scan. Mild darkening at volume margins, page edges and endpapers age toned. Jacket soiled and lightly chipped, faded at spine. See scans. VG book in G plus jacket. Ellery Queen's anthology of the great criminals of modern fiction, including those of Dashiell Hammett, Agatha Christie, O.Henry, Leslie Charteris and Sinclair Lewis, among many others. A nice one for the mystery/detective genre collector. "Ellery Queen" himself was in fact the pseudonym of writers - and cousins - Manfred Lee (actually born either Manfred or Emanuel Lepofsky, in Brooklyn) and Frederic Dannay (actually born either David or Daniel Nathan, also in Brooklyn), who between them also wrote as Avram Davidson, Richard Deming, Edward D(entinger) Hoch, James Holding, Manfred Bennington Lepovsky, Milton Lesser, John Holbrook Vance, and Edward Hamilton Waldo. The Milton Lesser pseudonym was also used for contributions to sci-fi/fantasy pulps, though in those environs it developed into the more famous name Stephen Marlowe. L201
