Tra i più celebri esponenti della Scuola di New York, Guston fu, con Pollock, Rothko e De Kooning, uno dei padri dell'Espressionismo Astratto. Nell'ottobre del 1970, le critiche seguite alla mostra presso la Marlborough Gallery, che segnò il suo ritorno alla tradizione figurativa, lo indussero a lasciare gli Stati Uniti. Scelse l'Italia e si trasferì a Roma, ospite dell'American Academy di cui era stato borsista nel 1948-1949. In Italia era tornato anche nel 1960, quando partecipò alla Biennale di Venezia. In questo periodo travagliato della sua vita artistica, Guston dipinge la serie Roma. Dalle vestigia dell'antichità ai giardini all'italiana, dagli affreschi di Piero della Francesca ai film di Fellini, Guston sviluppa un repertorio originale, rivisitandolo con note satiriche di forte valenza simbolica. Intreccia paesaggi tipicamente mediterranei con gli incubi esposti Marlborough Gallery, figure incappucciate dallo sguardo fisso e assente, allegoria dei momenti di violenza più bui dell'America degli anni Sessanta.
