About This Item

Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1987. Scholarly and readable study of Roman law concerning the enslaved, considering how the law was used to ensure maximum value of the enslaved to their enslavers, while deterring possible retaliation: an import examination of a race-neutral system which could be contrasted with early American racist systems. Watson, a Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania, did later write on slave law in the Americas. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear but some foxing to the book, mostly to page edges & endsheets; jacket shows light edgewear, minor chipping & creases, hint of spine fade; couple of marginal ink marks. Text otherwise clean; 157 pages + note on author; index, glossary, chronology, notes. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Very Good. Octavo.
