Book measures 195mm x 140mm approximately.

A very nice binding in polished blue full calf. Spine with five gilt-ruled raised bands with elaborate decoration to gilt-boxed compartments and maroon title and author label. Gilt chain border to boards and gilt inner dentelle work. Marbled end-papers and paste-downs. All page edges marbled. Series of photo-images and diagrams throughout including to tile page verso.

CONDITION

In very good overall condition with book holding tight and firm. Boards exhibit a few very minor surface scratches and the odd mark. Spine has been uniformly sun faded. Very mild bumping to corners.

Internally the pages are very clean throughout with just a hint of mild age toning and a few occasional small spots, a little more so to end-papers.

Dr Charles Robert Gibson (1870 to 1931) was a prodigious and popular 20th century Scottish author of accessible scientific texts aimed at children. He inherited his father's business of Gibson Brothers & Co. He inherited the family firm around 1900. The money allowed him to indulge his love of writing about science.
