About This Item
Handsigned by the author to the verso of the title page in black pen "To Ronnie & his Princess with love Alun 59/86". Good condition with a corner crease to the final page and rear cover and browning to the rear cover. The page edges are beginning to tone. The usual inkstamp referring to the agent for the performing rights is to the preliminary page detailing the first production.
"Ronnie" is Sir Ronald Harwood, and his Princess is Lady Natasha Harwood (nee Riehle). Sir Ronald was an Oscar winning screenwriter/playwright/actor and Lady Natasha was a descendant of Russian royalty. The number 59 is in reference to the 59 Theatre Company, for which, Ronald Harwood acted in this play. The Rough and Ready Lot was Owen's second full length play. It was originally performed as a Third Programme radio play in September 1958, was performed on stage for the first time at the Olympia, Dublin in May 1959, received it's London premiere at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith on the 1st June 1959 and went on to be televised by the BBC on 22nd September 1959.
