About This Item

Bangor: Press of O. F and W. H. Knowles, 1878 First edition. 156pp. Original three-quarter black pebbled cloth, marbled boards. Boards quite rubbed, minor wear to spine ends and corners, Split showing along outer spine. Ex-library copy with spine label and bookplate to front endpaper. A good reading copy of this fragile title. The author's detailed narrative of the trip, events on board and at stopping places, with an appended thirty-page collection of anecdotes of life in California (Sacramento, Indians, rifle shooting, Yosemite, etc.) after his arrival. "Lamson left Frankfort, Maine, on April 3, 1852, on the barque James W. Paige. Shipping around Cape Horn, he and his fellow passengers arrived in the San Francisco harbor on September 7. Lamson devotes the vast majority of his book to the 158-day journey. He provides a good description of the abandoned ships in the harbor" (Kurutz). "It deals more fully with the personalities aboard ship than many similar accounts" (Hill). [Cowan: p. 341; Howes I: L-48; Howes II: L-48; Kurutz: 389; Hill, second edition: 965]..
