Description:
Controversial manuscript on the expulsion of Jesuits from South America["Ministro di Stato" (= Bernardo Tanucci (1698-1783)?].
Notizie Anecdote.
Italy (Naples?), 1759.
4°, 8 pp. Manuscript in black ink in a notarial hand on 18th century paper.
Ruthlessly anti-Jesuit manuscript, possibly by Bernardo Tanucci: prime minister of Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The text summarizes the events involving the Jesuits in the years 1755-1759, from the controversy over the Paraguayan Missions to the trials for the assassination of Joseph I of Portugal. This autograph is not signed but clues to the identity of the author can be found in a rare 1759 published analysis of the contents of this manuscript, titled Sposizione letteral delle notizie anecdote giustificative della condotta de' MM. RR. PP. Gesuiti nel Paraguai, e nel Portogallo per aggiungere al loro manoscritto di Napoli (Barcelona [= Naples?], Antonio Michele Cervellò). In the second edition of this work (1760, same publisher), editor Alfonso Nicolini… Read More

1690 Samuel Pepys 1ed State of Royal NAVY of England Glorious Revolution SHIPSSamuel Pepys was a 17th-century English naval administrator and politician who is best-known for his diary. His diary was a daily journal account of his life, kept for nearly ten years. It is an important and thoroughly detailed account of Pepys's life as well as major British events and life in London from the second half of the 1600s.
Interestingly, only one work of Pepys was published during his lifetime. His 'State of the Royal Navy of England' was published in 1690 and covers the state of the Royal Navy leading up to the Glorious Revolution and his demands for change. Notable topics include:
· the naval interactions with commerce ships
· the costs of new ships in the navy
· methods of acquiring new ship hands
· how to ready ships
· and much more!
Pforzheimer says of this work:

Description:
London: Samuel Leigh, 1820. First Edition. Full Morocco. Near Fine. A harder-to-find Rowlandson title that with its small plates vividly brings back the liveliness of the London street of its day. 12mo. 14 cm, or 5.5 inches, tall. Very much in the tradition of Hogarth, and pre-figuring Mayhew's "London Labour and London Poor", except this is virtually entirely visual. Here we find peddlers of every stripe (dog meats, artwork, doormats, earthenware, roasting jacks, matches, etc.), con-men, musicians. The backdrops are often stately Georgian structures, and there is a gentleness and joyfulness to some of the depictions that marks a small departure from the acerbity of some caricatures of the day and even some of Rowlandson's own work. While the faces are decisively un-realistic, there is a sense of movement in many of the images that is real, and one does get a sense of how things really must have been from this collection of plates. Full blue morocco, with gilt turn ins. Joints rubbed. A few…
