Saint Petersburg: [Dmitry Sayenko], 2016. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Sayenko, Dmitry. Number 9 of 15, folio, 44 pp., signed by Dmitry Sayenko. Dmitry Sayenko (b. 1965 in Kiev) learned a love of book illustration from his father, a book illustrator himself, by watching him at work. In 1995 Dmitry graduated from the Mukhina Art School, St. Petersburg, where he still lives and works and in 1993 he began to work in the artist book field while he continues to teach. For most of his books, Dmitry not only designs the book, but makes the cuts, prints and binds the books, and for several also makes the paper. His works are in private collections as well as institutions around the world, including the Russian National Library, the Staatsbibliotheck, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Van Abbemuseum, and the Eoun-ho Kim Collection, among others.

Dmitry's illustrations are powerful and evocative, and in addition to wood and linocuts he uses other media such as pieces of old sheet music in creating his books. This work celebrates the ages-old custom of "The Hunt", with its requirements for bravery and skill on the part of the hunter, and shares whimsical stories of royal personages who had a passion for hunting - such as the father of Peter the Great, who "had a huge collection of exotic birds, his falcon yards alone contained over 3,000 birds each of which he knew by name".
