When a group of Meburians, mostly Scots, came together in 1891 and passed a formal motion that it is desirable to form the Melbourne Golf Club, one of Australia's greatest sporting and social institutions came into being. Royal Melbourne has been at the leading edge of Australian golf throughout its first 100 years. The Club has staged Australia's first amateur golf tournament, was involved in the first professional match and was a moving force behine the formation of the Australian Golf Union. This is the public side of Royal Melbourne. The author also takes us behind the scenes to describe with a light touch, club life among the members, many of whom have been distinguished public figures.
