The introduction reads: ''Several years ago, when the repunched mint mark became my favorite variety, I naturally wanted to learn as much about them as I could. To my dismay, it seemed that outside of the Lincoln cents, there was no information to be had aside form some very scattered and unreliable listings. My interest covers all mint marked U.S. coins, so the only solution was to compile the data myself. What began as a simple aid for my own collecting interest has expanded inexorably into this book. When I began, there were about 250 different varieties known, taken primarily from Kramer's D/D cents and Harnack's S/S cents. I then added the well-known repunched mint marks to my collection. These included coins like the 1877S 'S over horizontal S' quarter, the 1938D 'D over S' nickel, the 1945S 'S over D' nickel, and after searching the various reference books, a few dozen more. However, actually going out and looking for the listed varieties in dealer stocks was an enlightening experience. For every coin on the list, I found many unlisted ones. The list grew very quickly. Van Allen and Mallis published their silver dollar encyclopedia and the list climbed to over 700 varieties. Other collectors continued to send me their finds and soon the list included more than 900 entries. As of this writing, new varieties are still being found. It appears that completing the list will be a long tough job that we will never see the end of. However, we have sufficient information to fill a book and the need for such a book is great. Therefore, we have decided publish the information now to satisfy the demand.''
