About This Item

London, Edinburgh: T.N. Foulis , [1913] Soft cover, 12mo, (measuring 3 1/2 x 7 inches) in japanese vellum over paper, yapp edge, the cover design by Glasgow Artist and book designer Jessie M. King, (1875-1949) showing a view of a village with a church steeple at the end of a path going over a rise in the countryside, framed by overhanging branches of Horse-chestnut in bloom. This cover design, unsigned, and with hand lettered titles to both the front of the wrap and the spine, also has a single sprig of horse-chestnut on the rear of the wrap, and is done in black, green, green-grey, yellow, red and turquoise. Inside, the headers are printed in terracotta. Printed Turnbull and Spears, Edinburgh. 39 pp., plus iv pp (including 2 pp. publisher's ads.) CONDITION: Very Good.Minus. The wraps are interesting to compare to the other numbers in the series, which show minor variations in the color choices. Overall, very bright and attractive, if slightly soiled to the rear side. Inside, unfortunately there is moderate foxing throughout, affecting most pages but not the color plates.**The vibrant watercolor illustrations by London-born MAURICE GREIFFENHAGAN, R.A., (1862-1931) appear on the frontispiece and facing hand-lettered, illustrated title page. There are two additional Greiffenhagan full page color plates within the text. He was a contemporary of Jessie M. King, who also taught at the Glasgow School of Art from 1906-1926. Colin White "A Guide to the Printed Work of Jessie M. King" (2007) B112, variation (a). p, 60. . First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good Minus. Illus. by Jessie M. King( cover); Maurice Greiffenhagan.

Synopsis

he Moving Finger writes; and, having writ Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a line Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it.' In the 'rubaiyat' (short epigrammatic poems) of the medieval Persian poet, mathematician, and philosopher Omar Khayyam, Edward Fitzgerald saw an unflinching challenge to the illusions and consolations of mankind in every age. His version of Omar is neither a translation nor an independent poem; sceptical of divine providence and insistent on the pleasure of the passing moment, its 'Orientalism' offers FitzGerald a powerful and distinctive voice, in whose accents a whole Victorian generation comes to life. Although the poem's vision is bleak, it is conveyed in some of the most beautiful and haunting images in English poetry - and some of the sharpest- edged. The poem sold no copies at all on its first appearance in 1859, yet when it was 'discovered' two years later its first admirers included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Swinburne, and Ruskin. Daniel Karlin's richly annotated edition does justice to the scope and complexity of FitzGerald's lyrical meditation on 'human death and fate'.
