This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Lattimore is an outstanding authority on Mongolia and Inner Asia, making this an excellent primary source on Central Asia, and some of its magnificent ruins. In this record of his journey he comments on all the various aspects of the historical past of this remarkable city, its geographical location, legends and stories, the Nestorian remains, as well as, fascinating description of the trading city of Kweihwa, the town of Kalgan, the important Mongol religious foundation of Shiretu Jo, known to Chinese as Chao Ho or Temple River, temple domain of Pailingmiao on the main caravan route, about 120 miles from Kweihwa, Nestorian ruins in the valley of the Aibagh-in Gol, the ruined city of Yisun Sume-in Tor or Ruins of Nine Temples (old Nestorian city), the Great Wall of China, and Chinese Colonization and its drastic effect on Tumet (Tümed) Mongols - causing them to leave their settelments, losing their language and culture while adopting Chinese language and way of living. With remarks on the opium trade under the Chinese military, taken from Kansu to Kalgan, Mongols levying taxes on the opium trucks running through their territory, the political importance of Ongut, as well as some speculations on the complex ancient Mongol history and geography, and the recent Russian and Japanese influence, etc.. Lattimore, 1900-1989, was an American author, educator, and influential scholar of Central Asia, especially Mongolia. . From 1920 to 1926 he was engaged in business and newspaper work in China.
