London: Bell and Daldy, 1857 A fair copy of the extremely scarce 1st edition of J G Cummings' work on monumental remains in the Isle of Man. Cummings (1812-1868) was an archaeologist and geologist and researched extensively on the Isle of Man during his tenure as Vice Principal of King William's College from 1841-1856. This copy is in the original binding with leather spine and paper-covered boards. The spine is in very poor condition with loss to the top section and general delamination. The front board has browning and scuffing with paper loss at the edges and a dent in the side edge. There is some ink marking to the back board. The original endpapers are present, with some slight splitting at the front endpaper joint. There is a small ink signature of A F Blake to the fep and a set of loose papers with extensive notes in runes and ogham. Contents: decorative title with tissue guard; dedication; prefatory note pp v-vii; tabular view of inscribed stones 1p; text with errata slip pp 1-44; list of subscribers 4pp; 14 plates with tissue guards; comparison of Manx Runic Alphabets with others 1p. There is a stain to the decorative title, but the text and plates are clean. There is occasional scholarly pencil annotation to the text. Paper lightly toned.
