LONDON :

LONGMAN, ORME, BROWN, GREEN, & LONGMANS.

______

1840

DESCRIPTION

(ii) + xxiv + 615pp + (ii)

Book measures 225mm x 145mm approximately.

Bound in half tan calf over marbled boards. Later spine with five gilt-ruled bands with green title and author label, with gilt motifs to compartments. A number of small wood engravings throughout.

CONDITION

Good condition overall with binding holding nice and firm. A few surface scratches and marks with some knocks to boards and some small losses and nibbles of leather to edges, and bumping to corners. Internally the pages are largely clean with just the odd foxing patch and spot, and a little grubbiness to end-papers and paste-downs. Neat ink inscription dated 1875 to front end-paper.

Please refer to the photo images for a clear indication of both condition and content.

A nice sound copy of this interesting work.

INTERESTING

William Howitt (1792 to 1879), was a prolific English writer on history and other subjects. Howitt was born at Heanor, Derbyshire. His parents were Quakers, and he was educated at the Friends public school at Ackworth, Yorkshire. In 1814 he published a poem on the Influence of Nature and Poetry on National Spirit. He married, in 1821, Mary Botham, who like himself was a Quaker and a poet. William and Mary Howitt collaborated throughout a long literary career, the first of their joint productions being The Forest Minstrels and other Poems (1821). The Rural Life of England was originally published in 1838 and proved very popular.
