This is a first part of only two dedicated to bibliography of books in Russian on subject of art. This part was dedicated to art theory with 285 titles divided into two big sections: general art theory (general aesthetics, art and nature beauty, art and social life, art and education, and other) and general theory of fine arts. The main index is accompanied by alphabetical authors' index. Each entry includes author, title, imprint, size and number of pages, sometimes price and table of contents.
Oscar Vol'tsenburg (1886-1971) was a Russian and Soviet bibliographer, librarian, art critic and teacher. From the very beginning of his activity in National Library, Vol'tsenburg combined theoretical and practical aspects of library work, the main thing in it was the creation of the theory and methods of bibliography and fundamental bibliographic and art history work. With his «Bibliography of Arts» began the history of the Soviet bibliography of this industry. The main business of his life was collecting card index of works on Russian artists from the 11th century. By 1941, the card index totaled 500 thousand cards to 25 thousand names of artists.
