About This Item

New York: The Viking Press, 1948. First Edition. Octavo. 220pp., illustrated with photographic images by Robert Capa. Steinbeck and Capa decide to travel to Russia. While ordinary people as well as experts were telling each other all about Stalin's plans and communist intentions, one was trying to find out what the millions of human beings in the U.S.S.R. were really like as people. They travelled throughout Russia but spent most of their time traveling through small cities and countrysides such as Ukraine and the Caucasus. Visiting people from all walks of life; workers in factories, peasants in the fields, farmers and more. They eventually find how they lived and what they think. A fine copy bound in 1/4 cream cloth over light blue cloth lettered in dark blue, spine lettering in dark blue, in a very good unclipped pictorial dust jacket with wear to corners and spine ends, one small, closed edge tear to rear panel.

Synopsis

A Russian Journal was written by John Steinbeck and illustrated by photographer Robert Capa as the two traveled through the bloc countries of the Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War era, shortly after the Iron Curtain fell across Eastern Europe. The journey, intended for a report with the New York Herald Tribune, recorded the grim realities of factory workers, government clerks, and peasants of the region (from Moscow and Stalingrad – now Volgograd – to the countryside of the Ukraine and the Caucasus). This literary and photographic record of life under Joseph Stalin's rule is now regarded as a valuable historical document.
