About This Item
London: T.Cadell & W. Davies, 1817. 21st edition 'with additions' . cloth-backed green boards. Fair. 8.5 Cms x 13.5 Cms. dedication+f/piece (engr.More portrait) , t.p.with enr.central ill.+200, uncut edges; fr.gutter gone leaving covers hanging from back, prev.owner's gilt label top fr.pastedown, what is curious though is that t.p. has the name 'James Esdaile' very neatly inscribed in outer margin, internally otherwise clean, tight & unmarked ;covers quite clean but fr.joint and top chipped, while only fixed along back joint as mentioned before. One obviously thinks it highly likely that this was the copy owned by Esdaile (1808-1859), later famous for using mesmerism/hypnosis for surgical anaesthetic purposes while in India, who would have been 11 when it was published and whose father was a church minister.
