Glasgow, Scotland: Brown, Son & Ferguson, Ltd., 1956. 1956 Stated First Printing. NEAR FINE in NEAR FINE price-intact dust jacket. A clean, unmarked and firmly bound copy. Pages, including foldouts and illustrated endpapers, are fine. Green hardcover, title gilt-stamped on spine and blind-stamped on front, is fresh with only slight edge wear. Binding and hinges firm, intact and straight. Illustrated jacket is clean and complete with British price (60s) on front flap. Lightly edge worn with one short tear to top edge of front (with old tape repair on reverse side of jacket). There are 2 faint blue horizontal stripes caused by an old archival protector, visible on reverse of jacket but difficult to see on printed side. Jacket is in a new archival protector. A thorough and beautifully illustrated treatise on cadet ships from the 1838 Swedish brig "Magnus Stenbock" to ships launched in the mid-20th century. Bound into the back of the book are 45 fold-out plates with ship plans. Plates are printed on light-weight paper and are in pristine condition. There are several pages of black & white photographs. 16-page chronological appendix provides essential dates, dimensions and brief outlines of working lives of 200+ vessels of various types. 7-1/4 x 9-3/4"; xiv + 373 text pages (including index) plus folded plates.
