"Sailor" is a big black Newfoundland dog, and few of his breed remain on the native island in Canada. Newfoundlands fell out of favor over the years as sheep-owners were finding attacks were being made on their sheep. Based in part on anecdotes from his neighbor William Sacrey, who had been on 3 sealing expeditions, tradition in the early 20th century in Newfoundland. This is a classic story of a youth, his dog, and and a ship of seal hunters.
