About This Item

Paris: Le Livre", 1923. Schmied, Francois-Louis. 7-3/4 in. x 5-1/2 in; 200 mm x 140 mm. (8), 416 pp. Six full-page color plates engraved and printed by F.-L. Schmied, woodcut ornaments designed by Schmied printed with the text by Frazier-Soye. No. 682 of 1000 copies (one of 850 on vélin de pur chiffon). Millimeter binding with brown goatskin spine and edges, paste paper sides, original wrappers and spine bound in. Fine. "The geometrization of the first illustration in Salammbô is so radical - considerably more than in any Cubist painting - as virtually to thwart any figurative interpretation without prior knowledge of Flaubert's text....What emerges is an example of dynamic equilibrium between a free interpretation of the text, and adherence to it; even the choice of colour plays its part, and the geometrization is subservient to a carefully-balanced independence of the illustration from the written word....Schmied's palate virtually constitutes a visual preface" - Nasti. Nasti B3.
