Based on the life of Sarah Jane Newman who came to Texas with Austin's colony hauled cotton and supplies for the Confederacy, married 5 times, drove an ox cart between Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande. Novel based on the history of this pioneer Texas woman who became famous as a horse trader and cotton freighter in South Texas during the Civil War. She had a ranch in what was known as "Dark Corner" in Bee County. The author grew-up on a ranch in Zavala County, attended school at Carrizo Springs and married Scull's grandson.
