About This Item

London: John Murray, 1829. Leather. Good. 7" by 4.5". Edward Francis Finden. A half calf bound copy of Sir Humphry Davy's classic work on fishing. In a half calf binding. Ink inscription to the first blank page, dated 1891. 6 plates, along with small illustrations throughout. Collated complete. In this work, Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829) imparts information about fishing, particularly salmon and trout fishing, through the medium of conversation between fictional characters. The second edition of this book was given six new plates to augment the three present in the first published a year prior. Although best known for his scientific achievements, Sir Humphry Davy was also a keen angler. He dictated this first book while convalescing. It was popular enough to reach a 5th edition by 1869. In a half calf binding. Externally sound with rubbing to the spine and extremities, and losses to the head and tail of the spine. The front joint and hinge are tender but still reasonably firm; the rear hinge is slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with some spotting to the plates and surrounding leaves, generally not affecting the illustrations. The odd spot to the first and last pages. Good
