83, 1879 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A five volume set of French art catalogues dating from the late Nineteenth Century, in attractive quarter-morocco bindings. Cataloguing the Paris Salon's from 1879-1883, the volumes contain plates and reproductions of the works throughout, and act as a fascinating insight into both the art itself and the renowned events. The Salons were the official art exhibitions of the Academie des Beaux-Arts of Paris, considered to be the greatest annual art events in the Western World. Beginning in 1667, the events were intrinsically linked to Paris, its trends and people, continuing throughout the French Revolution and Paris Commune (the years upon which the Salon was considerably liberalised) and up until 1903, where several schisms occured, although the Salons would officially continue after this point. Included here are reproductions of works depicting the likes of Victor Hugo, portraits by Carolus Duran, and many other significant French works. Each volume contains the bookplate of the Guille-Alles Library of Guernsey. Condition: In decorative quarter-morocco binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally smart, there is wear to the extremities, backstrip and joints, as well as markings to boards and a significant instance of rubbing to the 1880 volume and institutional labels to the base of each spine. There is also some strain to the hinges. Internally, the pages are firmly bound and are largely bright and clean, although there are instances of spottnig and foxing throughout the volumes.
