Hardcover. 178, [4] pp. Octavo [23.5 cm] Original, pebbled green cloth over flexible card boards, with an embossed title and wagon vignette on the front cover. Black and white facsimile photos and illustrations; pictorial endsheets. In very good plus condition, with light rubbing along the edges of the spine and covers. The pages are mildly age-toned. No dust jacket. Flake 4565, Howes K59. Charles Kelly's first book, and a great work on the different explorers and groups that crossed the Salt Flats, beginning in the early nineteenth century. Includes accounts on Jedediah Smith, Bartleson, Fremont, Clyman, the ill-fated Donner Party, Stansbury and early twentieth century motor travel.
