About This Item
Extended Description and Notes
Privately printed by Imprenta Gutenberg, 1940. Hardcover. Very Good. Lavish compilation of 45 ca. 1940 Ecuadorian photographic prints by Theodore Roosevelt's cousin Andre Roosevelt. Image topics include architecture, industrial installations, landscapes, native residents and more. Of special note is a rare photo of the Guayaquil Golf Club. Pages facing photos display explanatory, rubricated captions. Inscribed and signed by author/photographer Andre Roosevelt to unnamed recipient thus: "To remind you that we are expecting | you back in Quito very soon - where | you will find peace and .... good investments. | We did have fun! | Andre Roosevelt." Foreword by Juan L. Gurrell. Bound in brown felt llama leather with finished versos. Stitched edges, gilt-stamped title and author to front panel and cloth tie. Letterpress printing on vellum. Limited Edition of 400 copies, 300 in English only and 100 with an additional index in Spanish. This copy, among the 300, states on page 100 that two plates had been destroyed in production and were replaced by two new plates tipped-in to pages 97 and 99, thus making this the second state of the First Edition. (The latter two pages are not rubricated.) Collation: [blank, 4] [1-2] [inserted blank leaf] [3-4] 5-100. Complete as issued. 13 3/4" x 10 1/2". Tight, unmarked copy. Leaves wrinkled at and near where glue was applied to tip plates in - endemic to this publication. Several small, round dents to back panel. An exceptionally presentable copy of a scarce publication. In addition to his significant photographic accomplishments, Roosevelt won a gold medal in Rugby with the French team at the 1900 Summer Olympics and was instrumental in publicizing the island of Bali to the American tourist trade. With Armand Denis, he shot the captivating Bali film Goona-Goona, An Authentic Melodrama, which sparked a boom in Bali tourism.
