About This Item
Rare collection of offprints mainly from the Giornale di Fisica ecc. di Pavia. Angelo Bellani (1776-1852) was an Italian physicist. In particular, he was the inventor of new types of aerometers and was the first to use the thermometer for precision studies in meteorology. He also was founder of the first Italian company producing mercury thermometers. His scientific activity was very varied. In particular, he is remembered for his opposition to Alessandro Volta's theory on the formation of hail. In his Defense of the supposed letter of Mr. Count Volta, Bellani argues that the heat of the sun's rays increases the temperature of the total mass of the clouds, so that the outer surface evaporates more quickly, but does not cause the first freezing of the cloud, contrary to what Volta stated. To prove his thesis, Bellani had two thermometers freeze, one in the sun and one in the shade, highlighting how the second froze faster. The empirical verification of this thesis is that hailstorms occur more frequently at night. - Visit our website to see more images!
