About This Item

Good. Hardcover. A sammelband comprising of selected sections of the magazine "The Land of Sunshine," likely dated between 1898 and 1901. Bound in contemporary half leather with leather labels on spine reading "New Mexico" and "Benavides and Perrea." We believe there to be 10 issues included in this compilation with many b&w plates and totaling approximately 88 pages. The issues were compiled haphazardly, by someone who was more concerned about content than appearance. Some leaves are cut in half and pasted onto the backs of a plate or leaves (scrapbook style) , plates are pasted together, signatures vary in size; issues are not always in chronological order and numbering is all over the place (likely the compiler of this volume only included subjects of interest, hence the wide range in pagination). Boards have moderate rubbing and soiling, spine has moderate chipping; text block has light toning and previous owner has written a few dates in pencil on leaves. The content of this sammelband revolves around the Fathers of the New Mexico Missions, specifically Fray Alonso de Benavides and Fray Estevan de Perea. Both were "Father Custodians of the Missions of New Mexico" in the early 17th century. The Land of Sunshine magazine was edited during this time period by Charles F. Lummis, and he provides editorial notes throughout the publication. Lummis often voiced his own in opinions in this magazine, championing Native American rights and criticizing Federal Indian policy. The name of the magazine changed to "Out West" in 1902. The articles found in this selection are mostly translations of the Fathers' work but contributions were made by Frederick Webb Hodge and Charles F. Lummis. Plates depict missions, pueblos, and native peoples. ; B & W Plates; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
