Print. 1 pages; A steel engraved portrait of Samuel Kier extracted from Cushing's History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Including its Early Settlement... also Portraits of Some of its Prominent Men. Chicago: A. Warner & Co., 1889. The portrait measures 10" by 7" with the image and facsimile autograph centered; protective tissue guard in place. Samuel M. Kier settled in the upper part of East Deer township in Pennsylvania. The first petroleum found in this region was discovered by drillinbg for salt on this property and was named "Kier's Petroleum or Rock-Oil." Much of the oil produced in this region ws refined by a process developed by Samuel Kier sometime prior to 1850. Kier was the chief owner of the Mechanics' line of steam boats which ran on the canal between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia with a tidewater branch to Havre de Grace. As railroad began to supplant canal boats for transport of various goods, Mr. Kier adapted purchased in connection with Mr. Jones an iron furnace and forges in the Allegheny Mountains. .
