Chicago: A. Warner Co.. Very Good. 1889. Print. 1 pages; A steel engraved portrait of Samuel R. Johnston extracted from Cushing's History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Including its Early Settlement... also Portraits of Some of its Prominent Men. Chicago: A. Warner & Co., 1889. The portrait measures 10" by 7" with the image and facsimile autograph centered; protective tissue guard in place. Samuel R. Johnston, born in Pittsburgh in 1797, received an excellent education and then acquired a knowledge of the printing business in the house of Cramer & Spear. In 1818 this business passed to the control of Mr. Johnston and his brother-in-law. From 1819 to 1822 they published the Pittsburgh Gazette, a weekly paper. They also published the St. Louis Register and the Republican Advocate. Eventually becoming Johnston and Stockton, the firm published both school books and general interest books comprising many hundreds of volumes. He was a successful businessman and staunch pillar of the community until his death in 1854. .

At The Antiquarian Book Shop, located in Georgetown - an historic neighborhood of Washington, D.C. we have been buying, selling & appraising rare, interesting and scholarly books in Georgetown for more than 30 years.
