Clean, bright and solid. 631 pp. Translated from the Italian by Marguerite Waldman and Bernard Wall. With an introduction by Valerio Di Balvano. A novel in 5 parts. "The novel describes modern European experience but...the book's drive is inward to an elusive centre of private martyrdom." The final part sees Italy rise from its ashes, with Giuliano resuming his search for his fortune and returning to Sicily to accept his fate.
