New York: Judge Company. Very Good+. 1893. First Edition. Print. 1 pages; Image clean and clear, bright white matting. Image measures 13 X 9.25 inches; matted measures 22 X 14 inches. Full page cover of JUDGE magazine for June 10, 1893 depicting two gentlemen dressed like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson walking past a poster announcing "Society receives the Duke of Veragua and the Duchess / Grand Ball and Receptions to the Infanta ...." Legend beneath the illustration reads: "SASSIETY IS HAPPY. / Cholly Snob: 'Deah boy, this is indeed some amelioration of our misfawtune in being born in Amerwica.' Arthur Dudley: 'Yass, and if the deah English Prince would only come ovah, I could - aw - die happy, son't you know.' " Grant E. Hamilton was an American artist, illustrator and political cartoonist. He eventually became the art editor for JUDGE, a position he held for more than 20 years. In addition to his fame as a political cartoonist, Hamilton was the creator of the 'full dinner pail' campaign slogan used by President McKinley in the 1896 Presidential campaign when he was running against William Jennings Bryan. He also held the position of chief of the government art bureau during World War I. The Duke and Duschess of Veragua, alledged direct descendants of Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus), made a Grand Tour in 1893, making an impression in many social circles. The tour included a visit with President Grover Cleveland to attend the World's Fair in Chicago where reproductions of the early documents of his family were on display (many on loan from the Duke himself). .

At The Antiquarian Book Shop, located in Georgetown - an historic neighborhood of Washington, D.C. we have been buying, selling & appraising rare, interesting and scholarly books in Georgetown for more than 30 years.
