It is FASCINATING to read about, and see via detailed maps, the Europe of 1902 as seen by American tourists. Written by an Englishman for the American traveler, this guide was completely revised annually for at least 60 years, and Guides from around the Turn of the Century are RARE. Guides published in London are also RARE. The size of the hardback (4" x 6 1/8") was meant for keeping in your luggage (satchel), and it has 307 pages, including detailed index, 3 fold out detailed maps, a comparison of U. S. and various European monies, weights and measures, and all the details about the individual countries. No dust jacket as designed. The dozen or so full page ads at at the front and back are almost as great as the content (examples: "Horsford's Acid Phosphate" which has "proved to be of extraordinary value in the prevention and alleviation of seasickness;" and "L'Hotel de l'Europe" in Heidelberg which is "under the management of a member of the Hauser family." Overall condition is Good Plus. Pages = Good Plus: several of the front ads have separated and are laid in, very light tanning, all 3 maps have a tear where they attach to the page, final page of blank "memoranda" pages has Chinese characters written in, else clear, corners rounded as designed, tight to binding, no additional tears or marks. Cover (red boards with black quarter bound heaving cloth (spine and corners) with design of a satchel plus particulars in gold gilt front only) = Good Plus: significant rubbing and scraping, else tight, sharp, clear and square. Laid in: bookmark from Hotel du Parc, Vichy, France--the hotel used for the Vichy government during World War Two.
