About This Item

London, Printed for A. Millar..., 1751. Small 8vo, 155 x 92 mms., pp. [ii], xxiv, 154 [155 - 156 adverts], contemporary calf; joints cracked (but firm), lacks label. The translation here is by the physician and translator Thomas Brewster (1705 - ?) began publishing his translations of Persius in 1733 and published translations of all six satires in 1751. ODNB notes that "Edward Owen praised Brewster's translation, noting the poet's 'uncommon delicacy of ear' and 'perfect knowledge of his author'." Henry Fielding also complimented him on his translation, quoting from it in his Miscellanies; Brewster was also one of the subscriber to the Miscellanies. Fielding also brought real-life into fiction by making Brewster the physician who attends the philosopher Square at the end of Tom Jones.
