About This Item
Good. 1864. Lithograph. Color lithograph depicting the Satterlee General Hospital, West Philadelphia. Print measures16 ¼" x 22" and has no content on verso. Print has moderate toning and soiling, creased in upper right corner, and has one 3" tear, two 1" tears and a few ¼" tears along edges; glue residue on verso; colors are still vibrant. This print was created when the hospital was still in use during the American Civil War. Information about the hospital was printed in the margin: "This is perhaps the largest and most complete Army Hospital in the world. It covers sixteen acres of ground. There are 21 wards, containing 4500 beds. The length of the buildings is 900 feet. There are altogether 7 acres of floors. It was opened for the reception of our brave sick and wounded soldiers, June 9th, 1862. Admitted up to May 27, 1864 12,773. Deaths, 260. Since the great battles of the Wilderness and Spottsylvania, there have been several hundred tents put up outside of the enclosure, as the accommodations are not sufficient for the large numbers of patients daily arriving from the field." Scarce with copies found at AAS and University of Michigan as of January 2020. .
