About This Item
Bártfa or Bártfafürdő (today: Bardejov or Bardejovské Kúpele in Slovakia) is known for its salty, chalybeate mineral springs, where the first spa was built in 1777. This book describes the mineral water of Bártfa and shows the panorama at the spa's founding epoch.
The first part of the book - Kitaibel's work - gives the specification of the spring, the physical and chemical attributes of the mineral water and describes its medical uses. The second part is by Kéler, the water-merchant who commissioned Kitaibel to write this book. He closes his part with a signature in ink and his blind stamp.
The plate is an elaborate copper engraving, showing the neighbourhood of the springs, the drinking-wells, the spas, the guest-houses and all the related facilities and infrastructure with explanation in German. The Hungarian translation could be found on the last four unnumbered pages of the book.
Pál Kitaibel (1757-1817) was a Hungarian botanist and chemist who discovered tellurium. Together with Franz de Paula Adam von Waldstein wrote the three-volume, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated work on the rare plants of Hungary, the "Descriptiones et icones plantarum rariorum Hungariae" (1802-1812). Beside all this Kitaibel was also studying the hydrography of Hungary, and this book is one of the results of his interest in balneology.
