About This Item

New York, 1930. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong folio measuring 13" x 10". String-tied black cloth over stiff paper boards with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 74 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 7" with captions as well as a variety of ephemera including newspaper clippings, letters, programs, and cards, among other items. Very good album with some edgewear and rubbing with near fine contents.

A scrapbook kept by Grace Remmington of Gloversville, New York beginning in 1907. The album is filled with miscellany from the period of 1907 through 1930 including some material related to the "vamp" actress, Theda Bara. Other items include holiday cards, newspaper clippings, horoscopes, and photographs Remmington collected over the years. One page includes a drawing of two hands with lines for fortune telling such as the heart line, life lines, and what planets belong to what part of the hands. Later pages show typed horoscopes written by Remmington which further shows her interest in astrology. The photos show trips taken by Remmington and her family such as a 1917 trip to Niagara Falls as well as images of Remmington's home life. Another section commemorates American's entry into World War I with a clipping of Woodrow Wilson and a caption, "War declared on Germany April 6, 1917." She also includes a poem "Your Flag and My Flag," an illustration of the White House, and numerous flag stickers. Programs for church services and other events are included throughout the album as well as typed prayers. She dedicates a page to the death of Teddy Roosevelt with a poem hand written underneath a newspaper clipping of an illustration of Roosevelt holding a baby. Following this are pages announcing the end of the First World War with newspaper clippings one which reads, "Kaiser signed his abdication with a shiver."

Roughly half way through the album Remmington starts writing longer, diary-like entries and poetry illustrated further with photos and clippings. One page is entitled "Employees of the Dempster and Place Factory" and show women of the company posed in small portrait style photos pasted around the page. The Dempster and Place or D&P factory was a textile plant that specialized in gloves and was the employer of Remmington and her friends in Gloversville. Other pages include wedding invitations, birth announcements, and thank you cards sent from friends. She was an avid lover of films and images from promotional advertisements, production photos, and fan club notices are seen here. One of these is from the Theda Bara fan club, including a letter from a Bara secretary thanking Grace for a letter. Other images show stills from the film, *Poppy*, starring Norma Talmadge, Eugene O'Brien and Frederick Perry.

An extensive collection of ephemera detailing a young woman's life in New York in the early 1900s.
